Books
- Why We Sleep: The New Science of Sleep and Dreams by Matthew Walker
- A wonderful book about the science of sleep, why sleep is so important and most importantly, how to get better sleep. I consider this a must read for generally every person.
- Motor Control and Learning: A Behavioral Emphasis by Richard A. Schmidt and Timothy D. Lee
- A textbook about the history and teachings of motor learning. This is a great resource for rehabilitative clinicians as well as coaches.
- Back in Control: A Surgeon's Roadmap out of Chronic Pain by David Hanscom MD
- One of my favorite books so far. He does an outstanding job of explaining the mind-body connection in medicine and provides resources to make a difference.
- The Power of Now: A Guide to Spiritual Enlightenment by Eckhart Tolle
- Anxiety and depression occur in the past and future. This is an outstanding book that helps learn the benefits of being present and how to accomplish that.
- Anatomy Trains: Myofascial Meridians for Manual and Movement Therapists by Thomas Myers
- One of the most influential books of my professional career. This will open your eyes to the connectivity of the body and give manual therapists a roadmap to treatment.
- Cressey Training Systems
- Eric Cressey is a leader in strength and conditioning and produces some great material. I think he does an outstanding job connecting functional movement with strength and power. I was always a big fan when I would have athletes work with him in the off-season.
- Mike Reinold
- Mike Reinold is in the forefront of baseball physical therapy and rehabilitation as a clinician and researcher. I love to see what he puts out on his website, podcast, and in research journals.
- Back in Control
- Dr. Hanscom's website that outlines the DOC process and provides resources for further reading on the topics discussed in his book.
- Functional Movement Systems
- I have had the pleasure of taking several classes with this group and have not been disappointed. Their methods for evaluation are key to my clinical practice and they have done tremendous work providing recourses for clinicians.
- Rehabilitation Prauge School
- The Prague School is the epicenter for DNS. In full honesty, I have not taken an official course in DNS although I would love to. I have been taught pieces of their philosophy and utilize it with nearly every exercise I do.
- Driveline Baseball
- Driveline Baseball has completely changed the way athletes train for baseball and brought technology to the forefront of baseball development. Their website has a ton of resources and great explanations.
- The Postural Restoration Institute
- I have taken a few classes with the Postural Restoration Institute and have been very impressed. Their model examines the body in a tri-planer manner and breathing exercises are used to balance the body and return function.
- Functional Anatomy Seminars
- Andreo Spina's Functional Anatomy Seminars and Functional Range Conditioning courses are some of the most in depth and best explained courses I have taken. I use his concepts constantly in the clinical setting.
- Psychology Today
- This may seem to be an odd addition to a sports medicine blog but Psychology Today has some amazing articles about the human psyche. So much of my job encompasses the mental aspect of sport and rehabilitation. There is hardly a day that I don't read an article from this publication.
- Simon Sinek
- One of my favorite authors, I consider his books a must read. He comes from a different background but his messages can be applied across disciplines. I highly recommend checking out his books and lectures.
Podcasts
- The Perception & Action Podcast
- Robert Gray PhD hosts a podcast discussing motor learning and skill acquisition that seeks to dive into the research and translate it to practical application for athletes, coaches, and clinicians.
- Elite Baseball Development Podcast
- Eric Cressy's podcast where he discusses topics related to baseball strength and conditioning, training, and performance. One of my favorites.
- The Ask Mike Reinold Podcast
- Mike Reinold's podcast where he and a group of clinicians answers questions and discuss topics related to physical therapy and baseball rehabilitation.
